10 jaar de schurk!
'Lekker griezelen', daar lusten schurken wel pap van. Het liefst met een zacht gegaard geitje er overheen gedrapeerd. Je snapt: het is niet geheel toevallig dat Merlijne Marell's Schobbejacques de komende Kinderboekenweek heeft gekozen om zijn 10e verjaardag te vieren. Want wie jarig is, mag bepalen wat er gegeten wordt, is het niet?
Zoals het een goede schurk betaamt kende hij vele gedaantes. Hier in een jurk op het allereerste portret dat Merlijne van hem tekende, nog iets ielig en onzeker in zijn rol. De komende weken laten we je zien hoe hij uitgroeide tot dé hoofrolspeler van zijn eigen sprookje.
Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava 2017
Schobbejacques is content dat hij alweer een museale expositie op zijn cv mag noteren. Samen met het werk van 14 andere Nederlandse illustratoren behoren de originele illustraties uit Schobbejacques en de 7 geiten tot de Nederlandse selectie voor de internationale illustratiebiënnale in Bratislava. De tentoonstelling in het Slowaakse nationale museum geeft een indrukwekkend overzicht van wat er de afgelopen twee jaar wereldwijd aan kinderboekillustratie is verschenen.

MUSEUM ARNHEM
Op uitnodiging van Museum Arnhem maakt Merlijne Marell nieuwe werken onder de titel There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in voor een presentatie in de serie Gelders Balkon.
Uitgangspunt zijn de vormen en decors van keramiek uit de Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek, gelijktijdig te zien in de tentoonstelling 'Van Art Nouveau tot Art Deco'. Ook de geschiedenis van deze werkplaats – een zakelijk en artistiek avontuur van twee broers uit Purmerend – dient als inspiratie, evenals de verzameldrift van de Arnhemse verzamelaar Benno Steenaert, wiens collectie in de koepelzaal te zien is.
Gastconservator Victoria Anastasyadis gaat in gesprek met Merlijne Marell over de totstandkoming van haar expositie. Het gesprek vindt plaats in ons auditorium. Houd er rekening mee dat het aantal plaatsen beperkt is, dus het is aan te raden op tijd aanwezig te zijn.

Guest Curator Victoria Anastasyadis invited me to create new work, inspired by the pottery of the Arnhem Fayence Factory, which will be shown in the connected dome room. December gift wrapping
The days are getting shorter and darker. Inside it is warm and cozy, and the lovely gift season is coming closer! For the month of December I designed a special wrapping paper that suits both the Christmas and the Dutch Sinterklaas gift traditions. This atmospheric illustration is printed in sheets of 50 x 70 cm, on a solid quality matte paper. Find it in my shop!

Some of the original illustrations of Schobbejacques en de 7 geiten are now on show at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam! In de beautiful building of the Teekenschool you can see the original artwork of seven award-winning books. The aim is to offer picture book illustration a platform and to learn children to look at art through the artwork they know from their own children's books. Entry to the exhibition is free and open daily from 10:00 to 16:00.
In December I'll give a drawingclass for children at the Teekenschool. This is already fully booked.
White Ravens
So proud to tell you that my book 'Schobbejacques en de 7 geiten' got selected for The White Ravens! The White Raven label is given to books that deserve worldwide attention because of their universal themes and/or their exceptional and often innovative artistic and literary style and design.
Each year the language specialists (Lektoren) at the International Youth Library (IYL), in Munich, Germany, select newly published books from around the world that they consider to be especially noteworthy. This list of books is compiled into the annual White Ravens Catalogue, which will be introduced at the Frankfurter Buchmesse and later at the Bologna (Italy) Children's Book Fair. This years catalogue include 200 titles in 42 languages from 60 countries. A total of nine books in Dutch and one Frisian book received a White Raven.

Annual presentation of the most outstanding book designs of the previous year (2015). A Dutch-Flemish jury selected fifty books: 33 Dutch publications and 17 Flemish titles, and Schobbejacques en de 7 geiten is one of them!
Some beautiful words of the jury:
First and foremost the colour palette is a big succes, with those deep purplish orange and greenish shades. Together they conjure up a wondrous imaginary world. This really appeals to the imagination sums up the general view. It's a real tour de force to print these woodcuts in waterless offset. It's just fantastically well printed. Everything about this book is right.
