There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in | Museum Arnhem

Op uitnodiging van gastconcervator Victoria Anastasyadis maakte ik nieuw werk voor een expositie in de serie Gelders Balkon van Museum Arnhem. Uitgangspunt zijn de vormen en decors van keramiek uit de Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek, en de verzameldrift van de Arnhemse verzamelaar Benno Steenaert, wiens collectie gelijktijdig in het museum te zien is.

Voor mij staat het kwetsbare aardewerk symbool voor aandacht, liefde en schoonheid. Dat kan ook stuk; uit onhandigheid, uit kwaadheid of door langdurig gebruik. Maar uit scherven, puinhoop en verdriet kan weer iets nieuws en moois ontstaan. Het balkon vormt een rondgang langs deze cyclus van maken, koesteren, breken en opbloeien.

In verschillende scènes neem ik de toeschouwer mee in een fabelachtige wereld, die bevolkt wordt door bijzondere kostgangers: Orchideeën met ondeugende vingertjes en een baardiris met bijtgrage tandjes, een teruggetrokken geest in de fles en een roze olifant in de porseleinkast, kleine vaasjes die grote handen vullen en een jongeman met een bord voor zijn kop.

Not so long ago Museum Arnhem commissioned new works for an exhibition on the Gelders Balkon of Museum Arnhem. They are inspired by ceramics from the Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek (1907–34) and the collecting mania of an Arnhem collector, the results of which are exhibited in the exhibition on the ground floor.
 
For me the fragility of pottery symbolise attention, love and beauty. And pottery can break because of clumsiness, out of anger or prolonged use. But something new and beautiful can arise again from shards, debris and sorrow. The organ balcony forms a circuit of the cycle of making, cherishing, breaking and regeneration.

In several scenes I take the viewer into a fantastical world, populated with unusual lodgers: Orchids with mischievous fingers and a bearded iris with eager little teeth. A retired genie in a bottle, a pink elephant in a china shop and a young man with a plate in front of his head.
